[hops around him, reaching out to pet and soothe his feathers]
Um, um. Some birds don’t have the wings for standing starts. They run to get speed or they jump off stuff. Think um… Maybe if you use your normal way to get up higher? Then can drop into glide.
[ he gives his wings one cursory flap, this time, before raising absent their efforts-- though he stretches them with a gaze full of intrigue, as he does his usual subtle fine manipulations of the combined Aero/Float spells. These DO make it easier to get lift, when he spreads them wide... ]
This is even easier, magically. There's the extra weight to account for, but the feathers are quite cooperative with the way I do my spells... takes less aim to get the lift.
[banks into a sharp turn to start winging his way upwards. flying straight up takes work even for muffin, an angle or circles would be easier, but he wants to keep near angie's magical ascent. like a gentleman!!!]
[ he gets to a height he can be-- let's not say happy, let's say optimistic with, and takes a deep, bracing breath. Tucks a lock of hair behind his ear, and watches Muffin work with a newfound appreciation for the realities involved. ]
[it takes some careful hovering once he gets there but he pauses, flaps a bit higher, and dips close to kiss quetzal on the cheek and to chirp a purr in his ear before spinning off to lead the way]
[ rushes to catch up after his too-slow start, and when he does, he spends a bit getting used to the new objective of successfully formation flying. it's tough, but... angel devil has now gone quiet with intense focus. ]
[it’s a good thing there’s nothing to run into in the sky with how often muffin’s looking over his shoulder. not just checking on his flight partner, that’d only take a glance, but more to watch angel devil fly.
when he does face forward again, it’s to sing a joyful assembly call for their mini flock of two]
[ angel devil locked in concentration in the midst of something complex and very kinetic that he's still trying to learn... that's like, peak smoulder without even trying to be doing one.
even with all that, though, he starts to flag again pretty soon, muscles at a point where they're rattling his shoulders and asking hey, why? at high volume. this is a little much for his stubbornly-maintained indoors constitution. ]
[ I'll be behind you, comes the telepathy cheat answer. They're drawing to the close! Of he can just get through that he will have successfully done this. ]
[dips his wings in a signal, understood! and starts circling for a good spot to land, slowing their speed and bringing them down lower. when they're not far above the ground he brakes hard, backwinging to stall and dropping down to the ground like a jump.
muffin considers that kind of landing easier and better looking than coasting down and landing at a run, but angel devil is a bigger bird... just in case, he's picked a spot without bushes or trees on the runway]

[ gives it another go, with a little more air before down he goes again.
it feels like it pulls on basically every single muscle group in his back in ways they've never been before . . . ]
Hah... Ah.
Out of curiosity.
...What, sort of start do you recommend I try?

Lift is what wings are made for! Have never seen someone hover without having to flap. Looks cool.

[ he starts gliding in that direction, picking up speed... ]
Three, two...!
[ three. he cuts the magic, and at first drops like a stone-- and starts flapping for dear life to try and get a handle on the situation. ]

—OOPS FALLING. swoops down alongside, pointing at his own wings as he flaps to catch himself]
Cup the air! Like swimming!

Oh! I have it? I have it! Ha--HAH!

[he doesn't want to show up angie with fancier flying, but he can't help doing at least ONE excited roll]
Keep it up! If gliding starts going down, just flap again.

he can already feel beads of sweat... geez. And muffin makes this look effortless all day. ]
Right...
[ going to keep it up as long as he can.
which isn't very. ]
