[ drops the call and appears in the fountain's shadow moments later ]

[muffin arrives not long after, having flown straight there rather than walk or run. he's still a dryad and so is his gryphon form: instead of a songbird/wildcat, he's a long-legged thing with a sharp face like a crane, with purple petals on his curved neck and orange flowers for his wings.

he lands, glances at the statue, then shifts forms]

Yo. How're you holding up?

I’m… holding up um, okay. Not great. Not terrible.

He'll be back. He's too stubborn to lose to a bunch of nightmares.

[ said without a drop of doubt ]

But— why did he go at all? What kind of ritual was it really?

The demon was a doctor of sorts. He required a body part and an emotion from each flock. Angel Devil was already dead before I got there, but I heard that he wanted to make sure that his body parts couldn't be taken.

Think of it as... refusing to participate.

...Refusing to participate is kind of reason people argue over.

Will think of it as protecting himself.

[ winces, gaze turning hooded for a few seconds before he regains his composure. though his voice sounds strangely distant, as if recovering from being slapped in the face ]

... Yeah, you're right. His body is something he absolutely can't stand to give up. I don't like it either, but... I get it.

[ clears throat, voice returning to normal ]

Anyway, I heard from Shadow Fiend that one or more Rose members has an exploding seed embedded in their heart. It'll be triggered next time they feel their stolen emotion — fear or secondhand embarrassment, in their case. I'd guess that it's the same for Daffodil, but for panic.

but hey now they can know for sure that muffin doesn't have a seed or that might've got him]

...will, um. See what Tart wants to do about that. Would... already be a bad situation if Tart was panicking.

he was banking on Muffin's fretful look earlier counting as panic, but he still tenses almost imperceptibly on reflex, deflating when nothing happens ]

You can’t um… jumpscare people other than Tart?

Non-participants have been punished before, so I don't know if Tart or someone else has it. Shadow Fiend doesn't know who on Rose got hit.

Other flocks are free game, though.

I could already float.

[ the stormcloud starts drizzling beside them. a couple of tiny lightning bolts zap the fountain ]

[ surprised chirrup ]

You like lightning, huh?

Am lightning element! I love lightning.

[ the cloud continues to shoot baby lightning bolts into the fountain ]

You mean you can cast it? Or are you literally made of lightning?
